WHO WE ARE, AND WHAT WE DO The Maple Heights Firefighters Association is the local branch of the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF #1184). We collectively represent the Firefighters, Lieutenants, Captains, and Fire Prevention personnel for the City of Maple Heights. These pesonnels' working conditions are agreed upon between the City of Maple Heights and Local 1184 through a collective bargaining agreement, that is negotiated every few years. The current contract can be linked to from the "contact us" section of this web site. Our organazation also belongs to the Northern Ohio Firefighters Association, which is a group of surrounding Union Locals that deals with labor issues in our region. The City of Maple Heights is an inner-ring suburb of Cleveland Ohio, meaning that it is one of the first group of suburbs estatblished outside of Cleveland. We are bordered by Cleveland's Lee-Harvard neighborhood, Garfield Heights, Warrensville Heights, Bedford Heights, Bedford, and Walton Hills. The population of the City is roughly 26,000. Housing stock is predominantly older single family homes; typically bungalos, colonials, and ranch style. There are also several 2-3 story apartment buildings throughout the City. Freeway I-480 runs along the entire northern border of the City, and a major railroad with intermodal shipping container yard seperates the East and West side of town. Any other type of emergency that you could possibly think of, the fire department has probably been called out for it. Our members also make up the fire prevention bureau for the City of Maple Heights. The bureau will conduct the fire safety inspections of businesses and public buildings within the City. They also conduct the fire safety education and fire scene investigations. In addition to normal fire department duties, some members belong to special operations teams. These organazations include the Chagrin Southeast Hazmat team, and tactical paramedics with the regional SWAT team (southeast area law enforcement). Above 2 photos from:chagrinsehazmat.com |
